A Couple of Foxhounds in the style of George Stubbs
A Couple of Foxhounds in the style of George Stubbs
This framed oil painting interprets "A Couple of Foxhounds" in the style of George Stubbs. Inspired by the original dated 1792. The painting features a hound and a bitch set against an imaginary landscape, creating a harmonious and also balanced composition that appears deceptively simple.
Unlike Stubbs's earlier, more formally posed foxhound paintings, this pair is depicted in an almost human-like interaction, showcasing a tender and engaging moment between the animals.
Likely commissioned by Reverend Thomas Vyner of Lincolnshire, an avid sportsman and also an expert in breeding hounds. Vyner’s foxhounds were probably bred from the 1st Earl of Yarborough’s renowned Brocklesby pack. In the same year, Stubbs also painted a single portrait of Ringwood, the leading hound of this famous pack.
Stubbs, renowned for his meticulous attention to anatomical detail and naturalistic portrayal of animals, captures the essence of the foxhounds with remarkable precision. The imaginary landscape serves as a perfect backdrop, enhancing the lifelike quality of the hounds and additionally emphasizing their interaction.
This interpretation pays homage to Stubbs’s unique ability to blend realism and also artistic elegance. Reflecting both the beauty of the foxhounds and the refined taste of their esteemed breeder. The painting stands as a testament to Stubbs's enduring legacy as a master of animal portraiture. Capturing the grace and character of the foxhounds with exquisite detail and emotion.
