The original painting is believed to be from the late 1730s. One of Canaletto's grand scenes depicting Venice, focusing on the city's pageantry and traditions. Canaletto's use of atmospheric effects and vibrant local colours in this painting is particularly innovative.

The commissioned painting firstly, presents a view of Venice's iconic landmarks. From left to right, the column of St Mark, the Doge's Palace, the Ponte Della Paglia, the prisons, and the uncompleted church of the Pietà (S. Maria Della Visitazione). All visible along the Riva Degli Schiavoni. Although Canaletto took some artistic liberties, the scene retains a sense of authenticity, while also capturing the essence of Venice's grandeur.

Additionally, the painting features everyday details like a temporary hut and a knife-grinder's stall in front of the Ponte Della Paglia. Therefore illustrating the vibrant life and activities along the Riva Degli Schiavoni. This interpretation honours the original's attention to architectural detail and atmosphere.
