A specially commissioned oil painting on canvas captures King George III's likeness in the style of Allan Ramsay, circa 1761-62.
The portrait depicts the King adorned in his coronation robes, replicating Ramsay's original coronation portrait from 1761. Ramsay produced numerous replicas of this portrait. Distributed to Britain's newly acquired colonial territories, which then symbolized the authority of the burgeoning British empire.
Born as the eldest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, George III, the first Hanoverian King raised and also educated entirely in England. His reign, spanning from 1760, ranks among the longest and most significant in modern history.
Despite facing challenges such as intermittent episodes of mental illness, he remained actively engaged in governance until 1811. A devoted patron of the arts and sciences, he assembled a vast library and promoted agricultural advancements.
However, his unwavering stance on American colonial demands ultimately led to the loss of these territories and additionally the dissolution of the first British empire. The original coronation portrait is housed at the National Portrait Gallery, moreover showcasing George III's legacy in British history.
