The City of London with St. Paul's Cathedral in the style of Canaletto

This oil painting on linen canvas interprets "The City of London from the River Thames with St. Paul's Cathedral c.1748" in the style of Canaletto. The renowned Venetian painter Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768). Canaletto often celebrated for his detailed cityscapes. From 1746 to 1756, staying in England and therefore gaining popularity among British art patrons. 

This painting portrays a scene on the river Thames, capturing the lively atmosphere of an 18th-century London River procession. The Royal River processions have a long tradition, dating back to 1487. When Henry VII organized a pageant for his wife, Elizabeth of York. Henry VIII continued this practice, especially with Anne Boleyn, and subsequent Stuart queens, preferring grand parades on water over Protestant land-based ceremonies.

The depiction of this event is reminiscent of Venice's Grand Canal, emphasizing the river's historical significance in London.

To give the painting a vintage appearance, the canvas has been treated with ageing varnish. Then stretched and mounted in a hand-made 4-inch swept frame with a slip in metal leaf finish. This frame enhances the classic style and complements the historic scene within the painting.

This commissioned work beautifully reflects Canaletto's style while bringing to life a significant moment in London's history, capturing the grandeur and tradition of river processions on the Thames.
