The Women Of Amphissa in the style of Alma-Tadema
The Women Of Amphissa in the style of Alma-Tadema
This commissioned reproduction oil painting on canvas is styled after "The Women of Amphissa" by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
The original painting, displayed at The Clark Institute in the USA. Illustrates an obscure story from the first-century Greek writer Plutarch. It depicts a group of bacchantes from Phocis who, after a night of celebrating the rites of Bacchus, awaken in the marketplace of Amphissa, a town at war with Phocis. The women of Amphissa have been guarding the sleeping bacchantes, protecting them from the soldiers who might harm them.
This Victorian-era painting is typical of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's fascination with classical themes, particularly languorous women in ancient attire. Winning the Gold Medal of Honor at the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1889. Demonstrating the high esteem in which Alma-Tadema's work was held.
Lastly, this reproduction, created by principal artist Liu Yingjie, captures the essence of the original with careful attention to detail and style.
