28th Regiment at Quatre Bras in the style of Lady Butler

A specially commissioned oil painting on canvas by our principal artist Liu Yingjie, interpreting The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras in style of Lady Butler. 

The original painting "28th Regiment at Quatre Bras" was created by Elizabeth Thompson in 1875. Two years before, she married William Butler in 1877 and became known as Lady Butler. This painting illustrates a pivotal moment during the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16th June 1815. Part of the events leading up to the Battle of Waterloo.

The scene depicts the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot of the British Army as they defend against French cavalry attacks at about 17:00. Based on Captain William Siborne's account of the battle. The soldiers shown forming a defensive position in a field of rye. Using their bayonets to hold off the advancing French forces.

Elizabeth Thompson, renowned for her meticulous attention to detail, took extensive additional measures to ensure accuracy in her work. To replicate the field of rye where the battle took place, she arranged for a group of children to trample down a field in Henley-on-Thames. Thus, providing an authentic setting for her painting.

The painting is celebrated for its realism and additionally its historical accuracy. Capturing the intensity and chaos of battle, as well as additonally the bravery and resilience of the British troops. Through her careful research and dedication to authenticity, Lady Butler created a powerful depiction of a critical moment in military history.
