This triumph established British rule in Bengal and cemented Clive's reputation as a formidable military leader. Mir Jafar, one of the defeated Nawab's generals, he allied his troops with Clive and, in return for his support, was then appointed Nawab of Bengal.

Though Hayman was one of the first artists to explore Anglo-Indian subject matter, he never visited India. This may explain the somewhat awkward depiction of the elephant in the painting.
