The Golfers in the style of Charles Lees
The Golfers in the style of Charles Lees
This specially commissioned oil painting interprets "The Golfers" in the style of Charles Lees. An iconic scene originally painted in 1847. The painting depicts a pivotal moment during a golf match. On the Old Course at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, St Andrews. The match features Sir David Baird and Sir Ralph Anstruther playing against Major Hugh Lyon Playfair and John Campbell of Glen Saddel.
Lees meticulously composed this intricate scene, which contains over fifty individual portraits. To ensure accuracy and depth in each figure, he used photographs as reference. This allowed him to capture the likenesses of the various golfers, adding a realistic quality to the painting.
This commissioned interpretation stays true to the original's complexity and energy. Focusing on the central players while also conveying the surrounding activity and interest in the game. It is a testament to not only the enduring appeal of golf but also the timeless elegance of the Old Course at St Andrews.
This painting not only celebrates the sport but also encapsulates a moment in golfing history that continues to resonate with golf enthusiasts and art lovers alike.
