A distinguished Neo-Classical commode chest, expertly crafted in flame Cerejeira, Morado, and intricate marquetry with Mother of Pearl inlays.

The serpentine top features exquisite fan inlays with delicate bellflower details, framed by a finely marquetry-edged border. Below, two drawers showcase sycamore veneer penwork swag inlays, demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship. The lower section consists of two Morado-banded and double-line strung paneled doors, adorned with floral roundels and a central oval medallion featuring an intricate urn inlay crafted from specimen veneers. The piece is completed with finely cast and engraved hinges and a precisely tooled lock, adding to its refined aesthetic.

Inspired by an original by John Mayhew and William Ince, circa 1790, this commode reflects the firm’s mastery of Neo-Classical furniture design. Mayhew & Ince, closely associated with the renowned architect Robert Adam, were instrumental in bringing Adam’s vision to life. Their influential 1762 publication, The Universal System of Household Furniture, was dedicated to the 4th Duke of Marlborough and showcased their commitment to elegant and sophisticated craftsmanship. The firm’s prestigious clientele included the Prince of Wales, the 5th Dukes of Devonshire and Bedford, and the 1st Duke of Northumberland, cementing their legacy as leading cabinetmakers of the late 18th century.
