This handmade bedside table is inspired by an original antique writing table from a Dutch East India Company ship, circa 1730, which is displayed in our showroom.

Crafted from selected solid mahogany and burr oak veneers, it stands on ebonised barley twist legs that extend into an intricately carved frieze. The veneered top features matched burr oak, accented with a fine sycamore line for added detail.

The Dutch East India Company dominated the spice trade throughout the 17th century, surpassing all European rivals in the Asia trade. Between 1602 and 1796, the company sent nearly a million Europeans on 4,785 ships to work in Asia, far exceeding the rest of Europe’s combined efforts between 1500 and 1795.

This piece reflects a significant era in global trade and craftsmanship, bringing a historical influence into contemporary interiors.
