Price
£7,810

The Gilded Lion Upholstered Armchair firstly starts with an upholstered back with a guilloche carved arched top rail and sides. Below, sits an acanthus baton arm with Lion carved terminals on bellflower and lapette cabriole legs. Lastly, the upholstered seat has a kidney pillow with lion head terminals issuing from a winged lion carved sides with lion legs and paw and disc feet.

This statement piece is part of a suite of furniture made for the Painted Room at Spencer House, London. The design is exceptionally bold, with winged gilded lions forming the arms of the settees. James Stuart, the architect who designed the house and many of its furnishings was one of the first architects in Britain to work in the new Neoclassical style.

Within the Painted Room, James Stuart adorned the walls with arabesques and oval panels. Emulating the style uncovered in the archaeological digs of Herculaneum and Pompeii, this design reflected his appreciation for ancient aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from Greek and Roman thrones in stone, his furniture likely mirrored seats supported on mythical beasts.

To conclude, this piece is available to purchase from stock as shown in green leather with a loose cushion in Ian Sanderson Zarina Seafoam.
