The empire style originates from the furniture that Napoleon introduced during his rule in the First French Empire period. Craftsmen often incorporated columns with rope-twist carving, animal-paw feet, anthemion, stars, and acanthus-leaf ornamentation, sometimes combining them with gilding.

Four column legs support a large flat top and bottom gilded in silver metal leaf with ebonised legs.
