Neoclassical Style Chest with Fine Marquetry Detail
Neoclassical Style Chest with Fine Marquetry Detail
A distinguished Neo-Classical commode chest, exquisitely crafted in flame Cerejeira, Morado, and intricate marquetry, showcasing the finest 18th-century craftsmanship. The serpentine top features an elegant fan inlay with delicate bellflower details, framed by a finely executed marquetry border. Below, two drawers are adorned with intricate penwork swag inlays on sycamore veneer, demonstrating the artistry of the period. The lower section features two Morado-banded and double-line strung panelled doors, embellished with floral roundels and a central oval medallion containing a meticulously detailed urn inlay crafted from specimen veneers. Finely cast and engraved hinges and a precision-tooled lock complete the exquisite detailing. Behind the doors, a serpentine adjustable shelf provides both functionality and elegance, while the commode rests gracefully on turned feet, enhancing its refined silhouette.
Inspired by an original by John Mayhew and William Ince, circa 1790, this commode reflects the firm’s mastery of Neo-Classical furniture design. Closely associated with the renowned architect Robert Adam, Mayhew & Ince were instrumental in realizing many of his furniture concepts. Their influential 1762 publication, The Universal System of Household Furniture, dedicated to the 4th Duke of Marlborough, solidified their reputation as leading cabinetmakers. Among their distinguished patrons were the Prince of Wales, the 5th Dukes of Devonshire and Bedford, and the 1st Duke of Northumberland, further cementing their legacy in the history of fine English furniture.
