The Captains Writing Table

An exclusive handmade writing table inspired by the Dutch East India Company, reflecting the design of an original antique writing table created for one of the company’s ships circa 1730, which is displayed in our showrooms.

Crafted from carefully selected solid mahogany and burr oak veneers, this piece is supported by ebonised barley twist legs, leading to an intricately carved frieze that showcases exceptional craftsmanship. The top is veneered in matched burr oak, accented with a thin sycamore line that adds a refined detail to the design.

The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, was a dominant force in the 17th century, monopolizing the spice trade in nutmeg, mace, and cloves, and outpacing all rivals in the Asia trade. Between 1602 and 1796, the VOC sent nearly one million Europeans to work in the Asian trade across 4,785 ships, while the rest of Europe combined sent just 882,412 individuals from 1500 to 1795.
